MONTGOMERY -- The River Valley League clung to a 2-1 lead after seven innings Friday (July 10) but blew the doors off in the eighth and ninth, finshing with a 10-4 victory over the Dakota-Rice-Scott League in the ninth annual All-Star Game between the leagues. The RVL now holds a 6-2 advantage in the head-to-head matchups, with a rainout in 2007 at Arlington.
Friday's game, and a pregame All-Star Home Run Derby, were held at Memorial Park in Montgomery. Chaska's Chase Hentges powered the RVL to a 19-15 win in the Home Run Derby with a whopping 11 bombs in Round 2.
The DRS touched Jordan's Scott Hollingsworth for a run in the first inning, but the RVL struck back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 2-1 lead that would last through seven frames. Prior Lake's Tyler Edwards drove in Chaska's Hentges to put the RVL on the board in the fourth, while in the fifth Chaska's Ryan Zimmerman scored Shakopee's Greg Campbell on a sacrifice fly.
The key blow in the eighth inning was a two-run double by Edwards, and the exclamation point came in the ninth inning when Chanhassen's Ryan Diers crushed a three-run, no-doubt home run to make it 10-1. The DRS made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth by scoring three times, but Henderson's Matt Nagel closed it out.
The Prior Lake Jays' Tyler Edwards was named All-Star MVP not only for his two hits and three RBI but for a pair of scoreless innings. Chaska's Zimmerman got the win with two shutout frames directly ahead of Edwards' innings, while St. Patrick's Mathias Dueval was tagged with the loss.
